Garden Diary, 17th April

Time is moving on and the garden is starting to look a lot more colourful and alive. Today has involved getting the lawns cut and the edging tidied. I have also got the full fruit netting up. There is already blossom on the blueberry (bottom left), the strawberry and the blackcurrant (centre right)

The gooseberry, the raspberry canes and the loganberry are all shooting nicely.

I have dug in some ash from all the burning I did last weekend and have weeded throughout since as the bushes fill out there is very little room for manoeuver. I’m still not sure if my late fruiting raspberries are going to come to anything. No signs of life there yet.

The vegetable patch and the greenhouses are also beginning to look more promising. There are some fine runner bean and pea plants almost ready to plant out and the greenery of the early potatoes are just beginning to break through the soil.

I am still cutting purple sprouting broccoli, curly kale and spinach which is wonderful.

The courgettes too are growing strongly though as yet there is no sign of the butternut squash or aubergines. The onions, I have both red and white, which I tend to use as scallions (salad onions) have also put in an appearance.

Still in the mini-greenhouse are the leek, chinese cabbage and dill seedlings. It will be a few weeks before I will be able to move these.

This will be the first year I have tried growing chinese cabbage so that will be interesting.

And finally before I go, here are the carrots (centre) that have over-wintered very well, the curly kale (right) and the lone top sprout of a potato (bottom left)

A good start, though there is still a lot of woodwork to be painted while I can still see it!

to be continued . . .
